Himare

Himarë is a charming seaside town on Albania’s southern Riviera, between Vlorë and Sarandë. Known for its crystal-clear beaches and relaxed vibe, it offers a peaceful alternative to the busier coastal resorts. Himarë combines turquoise bays, olive-covered hills, and a touch of history with its old stone villages above the coast.

Unlike larger beach towns, Himarë keeps a laid-back local feel. Visitors can stroll the small waterfront promenade, swim in hidden coves, or hike into the nearby hills. Its mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it one of the best places to slow down and enjoy the Albanian Riviera.

Because Himarë is small, it’s easy to explore on foot or by car. It works well as a base for day trips to nearby beaches and castles. Spring and early autumn are the best times to visit, when the weather is warm but the crowds are gone.

Below, you’ll find the best things to do in Himarë, with practical tips for each place.

1. Livadhi Beach

Livadhi Beach is the largest and most popular beach in Himarë. The bay has soft pebbles, calm water, and plenty of space to spread out. In summer, there are sunbeds, beach bars, and kayak rentals.

Tip: The southern end is quieter if you want fewer people. Early morning is also peaceful.

2. Himarë Old Town

Perched on a hill above the coast, the old town of Himarë is full of stone houses, narrow alleys, and castle ruins. From the top, you get amazing views over the sea and the coastline.

Tip: Go at sunset when the light is soft and the hills glow orange.

3. Porto Palermo Castle

About 10 km south of Himarë, Porto Palermo Castle sits on a small peninsula surrounded by clear water. It was built by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century and is still well preserved.

Tip: Bring water and sun protection — there’s almost no shade inside the fortress.

4. Gjipe Beach

Gjipe Beach is a remote bay hidden between high cliffs, about 12 km north of Himarë. You can hike 30 minutes from the parking area or go by kayak. The beach is wild and beautiful, with crystal water and no buildings.

Tip: Bring snacks and water — there are only small beach bars in high season.

5. Himarë Promenade

The small promenade by the sea is perfect for an evening stroll. It has cafés, ice cream stands, and seaside bars where you can enjoy the sunset. It’s lively in summer but still relaxed.

Tip: Try local seafood or traditional Albanian dishes at one of the family-run restaurants.
